AVI (3M) Infusion Devices
AVI infusion pumps all work on the piston displacement design, requiring a dedicated two-chambered set which alternately fills and is expelled into the lower tubing. AVI pumps have a greater accuracy than many pumps, being rated at +/- 2%, and offer a number of general-use home and hospital models, along with some more specialized models for specific therapies.
3M recently introduced a free-flow prevention mechanism in newer models which requires a set with a "safety clip". When inserted into the mechanism, located below the set access door, it prevents free-flow of medication by clamping off the line when the door is opened by accident. Older models such as 100, 200, and 400 series can use the new sets (designated by an "8C" prefix), but newer models such as the 280RT and 480 series will not operate without the safety clip installed.
AVI was recently purchased by Sims Deltec, which has since discontinued manufacture of all AVI infusion devices except for the model 3000. Although the AVI 100, 200, 280, 400 and 800 series of pumps are no longer manufactured, they are still available, and parts are still obtainable, to a certain degree, for the discontinued pumps.
| AVI 200A Infusion Pump General-purpose home and hospital pump, now discontinued, with impact-resistant plastic housing, digital rate and volume limit controls, integral pole clamp; the 200A is a newer, updated version of the AVI 200, with the only difference, aside from internal electronics, that the 200 indicates battery conditions with a "Lo Batt" and "On Batt" LCD on the front panel. The 200A, on the other hand, has an "AC ON" indication for AC power, and indicates low battery conditions with a blinking "On Batt" LCD. |
| AVI 210 Micro Infusion Pump Similar in operation and appearance to the 200 series pumps, except they generally sport a green rear housing; these pumps are used extensively for neonatal, pediatric, and fluid-restricted patient care since they program rate and volume in tenths of a ml. and only deliver a maximum rate of 99.9 ml/hr. |
AVI 400, 400A, 480, 480CM Infusion Pumps
Similar in operation and appearance to the 200 series, the 400/400A models can be distinguished by their red product label and rear housing and by the addition of a piggyback channel which allows secondary infusions, accessed through the same keypad as the primary. Earlier versions of the 400 require an access plug to be installed to allow piggyback operation. Parts replacement for the 400 falls under the same restrictions as the 200, since they have identical electronics except for the EPROM chip. The 480 series has specifications similar to the 400s, but the pumps require the newer sets with automatic free-flow protection clips. The 480CM is also equipped with an RS232 computer communications port, which allows computer monitoring and recording of infusion data.
