JCAHO Standard EC.12
(from the JCAHO Comprehensive
Accreditation Manual for Home Care, 1999-2000)
EC.12 The organization
performs maintenance, testing, and inspection procedures on equipment
provided to the patient.
Intent of
EC.12
The organization performs
and documents maintenance, testing, and inspection procedures on
equipment provided to the patient. It ensures ongoing routine
and preventive maintenance of all equipment rented, loaned or
purchased by patients. The organization
- performs routine and preventive
maintenance at defined intervals;
- tracks the location of each piece of
equipment;
- inspects all medical equipment
between patient use; and
- performs basic safety, operational,
and function checks on equipment according to organization policy
and manufacturer's guidelines.
If a piece of equipment
does not have the manufacturer's guidelines for safety and
performance standards, safety and performance tests, and routine and
preventive maintenance, the organization establishes procedures
including these elements.
Organizations that are
not capable of providing equipment maintenance make arrangements for
such maintenance with another qualified individual or
organization.
What Medical Specialties does

preventive maintenance procedures, based on manufacturer's
recommendations, for the regular testing, inspection, and repair
of all MSD-owned rental equipment;

same guidelines, for all customer-owned medical equipment sent to
MSD for service or repair;
- performs preventive maintenance on
each piece of equipment every time that equipment returns from
customer use, and at the manufacturer's regularly-scheduled
interval;
- maintains permanent and complete PM
and Repair service records of any piece of medical equipment,
either MSD- or customer-owned, that has been serviced at an MSD
facility;
- provides complete documentation for
all service provided in MSD facilities by MSD technicians, with
the ability to reprint any lost documentation for any pump at any
time;
- maintains a constant technician
education program, with techs going to manufacturer schools and
scheduling in-house seminars led by manufacturer-trained
technicians;
- provides between-patient preventive
maintenance procedures for customers by request
