Enteral Infusion Pumps
Enteral pumps are designed to provide nutrition to patients who are unable to ingest food, either because of recent surgery or because of the inability of various digestive organs to function properly. Enteral fluids are infused through the mouth or directly into the stomach or peripheral digestive organs. Enteral infusion is not considered as critical as arterial or intravenous infusion, so an accuracy of +/- 10% is both normal and adequate for many of these pumps. Although non-enteral infusion pumps can be used for enteral feeding, most enteral pumps are not considered accurate enough for other kinds of infusion.
There are a number of enteral pumps which have a higher accuracy of up to +/- 5%, such as the Ross Flexiflo III and the Zevex Enteralite.
Enteral Infusion should not be confused with Parenteral Infusion (TPN), which is infused directly into central veins and requires a higher degree of accuracy than is normally delivered by enteral devices.
