These devices, also known as "Aspirators," use a continuous or intermittent pump along with a disposable collection container to aspirate (withdraw fluids or air from a cavity) patients with throat or lung problems, or to provide wound drainage, usually from the chest or abdominal areas. Gomco 300, 3001, 6030, and 6037 Portable Aspirators

The Gomco 300, 3001, 6030 and 6037 are portable suction pumps designed for general aspiration in hospitals, clinics, and home care settings. The 300 and 3001 are continuous only, and have no intermittent operation, unlike the larger 6030 and 6037, which is capable of both and can accomodate 2 collection bottles at the same time. All models can accomodate various sizes of disposable containers, from the smaller 600 ml to the 1100 ml. or 1500 ml. disposable plastic collection container. Each uses a bacteria filter that prevents fluid and aerosol contamination of the device, with a hydrophobic, microporous membrane which filters air with maximum efficiency (0.3 micron particles in air), while blocking the flow of aqueous fluids and aerosol contaminants. The filter protects against contamination in the event of canister overflow and prevents the overflow from reaching the pump. Note: model 3001 and 6037 are upgrades to models 300 and 6030, respectively, and are identical in operation and features to the earlier models.

Clinicians seeking an aspirator that does a gentler suction than these models, using lower pressure levels, are probably looking for a Thermotic Suction pump, designed for suction of gastric fluids without harming the sensitive gastric walls of the stomach (Gastric Lavage). The Gomco 270 is a portable tabletop Thermotic Suction Pump used for this purpose, and the Gomco 6000 or 6003 is the same Thermotic Pump in a larger, upright cabinet.
